Press Release
FRED is pleased to announce the opening of our Leipzig gallery space at 4B
Leipzig Spinnerie Strasse. This gallery space has been awarded to FRED by Gerd Harry [Judy] Lubke of Eigen + Art and the Leipzig Spinnerei. FRED will be holding an exciting series of projects designed initially to showcase British and American artist's projects in Germany.

We are pleased to open this space with a solo exhibition by British painter Philip Jones. In large-scale oil paintings Jones shows the fantastical world of a synthetic mythology. Dramatic and theatrical pictures feature life-sized figures in a fluid parallel dimension of free-association imagery. Jones creates a rich universe, a runaway cosmos of Baroque science-fiction and cultural dream debris. On exotic alien worlds heroes, monsters and nymphs are cast in scenes of archetypal drama and re-invented mythic tableaux.

In these fluid and open-ended dramas, the references and inspirations are equally eclectic and expansive. From the set-piece history paintings of David to superhero comics the paintings collage together cultural, iconic and artistic motifs. From science fiction fantasy to baroque sculpture and Eastern deities, Jones forces connections and suggests the universality of compelling myth and imagery.

The paintings in this exhibition feature Jones’ central hero, a pale space cop, part Flash Gordon, part Hamlet, in one picture struggling with The Tentacles of Fear. In other large paintings strange and flamboyant characters appear as hallucinatory embodiments of the seasons and the planets. Enmeshed with its emphatic content, the work seeks the construction of a poetic painted form to express wide-ranging imaginative associations.

Philip Jones studied between 1991-94 at Central St Martins and 1994-96 at The Royal College of Art. In 1997 he was awarded the Rome Scholarship in Painting at the British School in Rome. This year Jones was included in the group show ‘Fantasy Island’ at Showroom MAMA in Rotterdam. This year Jones is participating in the John Moores 24 exhibition in Liverpool. In December of this year Jones will be having his first solo exhibition in America at Goff+Rosenthal, New York.
